Beta Impressions (part 2)

We've had the pleasure of having contributors with Beta Access. Be sure to use the link below to see more of their impressions from the closed DCUO Beta.

Last night I left the safety of the east-side Gotham police department and to my surprise, it started raining. It was so natural and is just an example of the organic nature of the game itself. I could almost FEEL the rain, almost FEEL how cold it was outside. From the rooftops of buildings you can see the headlights of cars off in the distance, making the city LIVE. Fly down to those same faraway locations and YES, those same cars exist. It's a wonderful, consistent, persistent world. They've wonderfully captured the gritty, darkness of Gotham in addition to Metropolis' pristine more polished appearance.

I couldn't help but notice how many villains were camped outside the area outside the police department waiting for heroes to emerge. Hopefully they'll be a better buffer-zone after launch. It just seemed too brazen, too arrogant. I couldn't imagine the same thing happening in real life, perhaps some automated defenses or other elements would be just the thing to dissuade this type of behavior. You can believe that "noob hunters" will try to prey on the inexperienced by camping spawns this way. The developers have to be proactive in combating this type of behavior.

The combat style of this game will fit perfectly on PS3--I also can only imagine how beautiful it will look in full HD. The graphics are something else. Character Creation? sigh..it's solid but I echo the sentiments of many when I say it needs to be less restrictive. OPEN IT UP. With monthly updates I can't see this being a problem for long. I can see the options being expanded pretty soon after launch.

more later!

  1. Character creation is intentionally limited. You're supposed to come out with a Mk1 suit (think Iron Man), and get better as you play (which I have seen happen in only a few levels). That said, more face options wouldn't be amiss...but, I understand limiting face/body-types in a game that is actively animated like this one...I'd rather have fewer options and a game that runs.

  2. i agree on the options/progression but I think making the image you want is important too. I'd rather have a game that runs well as well but only the creator of the character knows how he/she will progress visually. getting a cape of prosperity isn't going to change that.

  3. True enough, but no number of options is ever going to meet exactly (or in many cases, even come close to) the image in a creator's head. I enjoy the staggered progression of options with cooler options coming later, as well as the "style closet" feature for maintaining old looks and new stats.

That said, my access to the game so far has been rather limited (finals - terrible timing), and my opinion may change with deeper play.

  4. yeah that's one tough guys, i think the best thing they can do is add options every month. there'll always be something that's missed.

  5. gameplay is important but so is immersion. i think both need to be focuses.

  6. In my experience, brief as it may be, lack of immersion isn't a problem this game has. The scope and depth of the cities, interaction with famous NPCs, the cleverness of the quests all serve to drag you into the game. The flaws with limited character generation options are very small in comparison.

  7. I agree. I for one don't think we need to worry, guys..our sub fee guarantees improvement in every aspect of the game. we're looking at what they have at launch. they'll build upon it.
