DC Universe Online Goes Free to Play this October!!!

If you all haven't heard by now then the big news for this week, maybe even the rest of this year, is that DC Universe Online is now going with a free to play revenue model, much like the one that is currently being implemented in Free Realms! Some people see it as the end, some people see it as a new beginning.

From this reporter's eyes you've got the Mega Server update, Update 4 (which was a home run to a great percentage of the game populace), the Hardlight power update, then this. Here are the F2P options according to the IGN article that originally broke the news:

Free
New players will now have access to the current gameplay in DC Universe Online (including Gotham City, Metropolis, and all current raids and alerts), with the ability to create two characters, join a league and many other benefits. Free level players will be able to purchase downloadable game packs/updates, additional character slots, powers and more through microtransactions.

Premium
Any player who has spent at least $5 (including former paid subscribers and new players who have purchased $5 of in-game items) will qualify for the Premium access level. Premium level players will have more benefits available to them than the Free level player, including additional character slots, additional inventory slots, and higher cash limits. Downloadable adventure packs, additional character slots, and more can be purchased in-game.

Legendary
Maximum features and benefits are included at this level. Loaded with enhanced additional features, Legendary access will be available for a $14.99 monthly fee and includes all DLC packs at no cost, more than 15 character slots, more than 80 inventory slots, the ability to form unrestricted-sized leagues, and many other benefits.

To further solidify the validity of this news, Jens Anderson recently made a tweet about the breaking news.

Jens Andersen
"And it is official!
@dcuo is F2P. You play your way! So excited. This is great news. We will explain more tomorrow on webcast. Tune in."

This will definitely bring back a lot more people to the hero and villain community but the new business plan for DCUO doesn't just stop there. All games that are currently in SOE's portfolio as well as all future releases will be adopting this payment plan as well. This is definitely some exciting news and I'm sure this will bring SOE more revenue but the question still remains, how will this affect the current quality of the product that we have all come to know and love? Only time will tell but we here at the DP Blog are still very excited by this news. What are you thoughts?
