Downtown was the sight of a truly terrifying battle late on Christmas Eve. The Paladin, a currently unaffiliated hero, was in the process of stopping a ritual by the Church of Blood. What was meant to be a simple hostage rescue became a full blown conflict when Brother Blood and a sizable group of Demons arrived to intervene. The end result was numerous casualties, both cultist and civilian, with The Paladin leaving the battlefield with a fair few wounds of his own.
"I'm not sure what to say," the hero began, "I wasn't expecting Blood to actively step in, though I am thankful that the battle technically ended in a stalemate, and more so that no one was killed."
Eyewitness reports state that Paladin's tactics changed dramatically when the battle began to shift in Brother Blood's favour. When on his last legs, he suddenly lost the 'grace' that accompanied his usual fighting style, favouring a brutal, somewhat more lethal tactic, and seemingly ignoring a great deal of damage that was dealt to him. More detailed reports mentioned the use of "unnecessary" actions such as the breaking of bones and taking down fleeing opponents. One of the hostages even remarked that he seemed to lose interest in keeping the civilians safe. When asked to comment on this, Paladin simply replied "it's complicated".
Further investigation revealed that the Paladin had been working closely with fellow heroes Raven and Doctor Fate in order to combat Trigon, possibly revealing the reason as to Brother Blood's personal intervention, though, even this does not explain the entire story.
